The STSA hosts competitions for multiple handgun disciplines. Both ISSF and NRA are shot. The calibers used depends on the event, the usual ones are .177 caliber (air pistol), .22, .32, and .45 caliber.
10 Meter Air Pistol
10 meter Air (ISSF) shot with 4.5 mm (.177 calibre) air guns at a distance of 10 metres and the program consists of 60 shots within a time limit. Often shot on electronic targets.
25 Meter Pistol
25 meter Pistol (formerly sport pistol) is shot with .22 pistols and is typically a women’s event (equivalent to the 25 metre center-fire pistol for men). This is also a junior event (youth under 21 years old).
25 Meter Centre Fire
25 meter Centre Fire Pistol (ISSF) – typically a men’s event shot with centre fire pistols (.32 caliber). Course of fire consists of two parts of 30 shots each: a precision stage where 5 shots are to be fired during a 5 minute period and a rapid-fire stage where, for each shot, the shooter has 3 seconds to raise his arm from a 45 degree angle and fire.
25 Meter Rapid Fire Pistol
25 meter Rapid Fire Pistol (ISSF) – shot with a .22 pistol. A 60-shot match is divided into three series. Series are timed for each of 8 seconds, 6 seconds, and 4 seconds for each.
25 Meter Standard Pistol
25 meter Standard Pistol (ISSF) – shot with a .22 pistol. A 60-shot match is divided into 5-shot strings with different timings: 4 strings of 5 shots within 150 seconds each, 4 strings of 5 shots within 20 seconds each, 4 strings of 5 shots within 10 seconds
50 Meter Pistol
50 meter Pistol (formerly Free Pistol) course of fire is 60 shots within a maximum time of two hours. Shot with a .22 pistol with iron sights.
NRA 900 Pistol
NRA 900 pistol competition consists of firing slow, timed, and rapid fire using a .22 caliber. A match consists of 30 shots slow fire (three 10-shot strings, 10 minutes per string), 30 shots timed fire (six 5-shot strings, 20 seconds per string), 30 shots rapid fire (six 5-shot strings, 10 seconds per string).
NRA 1800 Pistol
NRA 1800 pistol competition consists of firing slow, timed, and rapid fire. Scores are aggregated using two calibers: .22 cal and centre fire. A match consists of 30 shots slow fire (three 10-shot strings, 10 minutes per string), 30 shots timed fire (six 5-shot strings, 20 seconds per string), 30 shots rapid fire (six 5-shot strings, 10 seconds per string).
