Tetrathlon

Four equestrian athletes from Saskatchewan are travelling to Guelph, Ont., to compete in the Canadian Pony Club’s National Tetrathlon, from Aug. 9 to 14. The Saskatchewan contingent includes Kylie Couture and Jaclyn Aarrestad of Debden, Sask. (Park Valley Pony Club), Brynn Carter of Saskatoon, Sask. (River’s Edge Pony Club) and Norah Ridley of Hague, Sask. (Northwinds Pony Club). Laurel Vaadeland of Debden, Sask. (Park Valley Pony Club), is coaching the Saskatchewan tetrathlon representatives.

What is Tetrathlon?

Based on the Olympic sport of modern pentathlon, tetrathlon includes four phases over two days of competition:

  • Air pistol shooting: Competitors score points for the total number of air pistol shots (20 shots for junior/senior levels) on the target that corresponds to the ring number. A perfect shooting score is 1,200 points.
  • Swimming: Competitors score points based on the time taken to swim 200 metres. The optimum swimming time is 2:39 for junior/senior athletes.
  • Running: Competitors score points based on the time taken to compete a 2,000-metre, cross-country course. Optimum time is 8:00.
  • Riding: Working with horses provided by the host site, competitors complete a stadium jumping course as well as a cross-country jumping course. Penalty points are deducted for refusals, falls and time penalties.

A note from the athletes: “The Saskatchewan tetrathlon competitors are extremely grateful for the support of the Saskatchewan Target Shooting Association (STSA) whose members have offered their experience and expertise to the Pony Club group. We look forward to working with STSA as the Saskatchewan Regional Pony Club works to build up the sport of tetrathlon in the province.”
